Words are power

24 Mar

I’m not interested in putting a picture on this post because me flipping the bird at the camera is a little less crass than I am actually feeling right now.

I’d like to tell all of you that for most of us in this world, the only power we truly have to make any changes, to do any good (or bad, depending on the intent), is the power that is contained in our words. Written words, spoken words, shouted words. That is all we have.

In the United States we are allowed the freedom of speech as long as it does not infringe upon another’s freedoms. Of course this is not relevant in privately run entities. With the internet we have endless space to express ourselves with words. We can express our love for products, our political opinions, even our rage at injustices. We are allowed to be happy and infuriated online with our words. Sometimes the World Wide Web is the only place we can be “heard.”

When someone censors your thoughts, regardless of their intent in doing so, it is hurtful and shaming. It is a slap in the face, a blow to the ego. It is so many things to the person who was brave enough to say them in the first place, and none of them are good.

Sometimes the truth is ugly and it makes people uncomfortable and that is okay. That is the way bad things should make us feel. Deleting it or hiding it or ignoring it only makes the speaker angry and it lets the ugliness win.

Use your voice. Don’t let people shut you up. Keep talking. Keep writing. Keep using your power, your words.

Here here! You have much to say and the content of your words important… shame on those who censor you of all people.

Isnt it ironic? Hypocrits be damned! You articulate what many cannot. When they silence you, be louder.
